65The Most Important Thing Is Content!
I'm relatively new to writing online and have spent a lot of time, perhaps too much, reading about how and what to write about, keyword research and article promotion. At times it can be enough to make your head explode.
As you can see I've been on hubpages for a little over six months now and haven't produced a lot of content compared to some of my fellow hubbers who have been here for a similar if not shorter period of time.
Why have I produced so little content?
Reading Is No Substitute For Action
I'll be honest, in the past six months I have done a lot of reading. This has been on a variety of topics from:

A backlink (also known as 'incoming links' or 'inbound links') is a link on a webpage, one you may own or usually somewhere else, that links to your target webpage or website.
In doing so, I've been reading a lot about how to write online, but not actually doing any writing.
It's like reading a computer game manual and never playing the game.
As I said above the most important thing is content. I've concerned myself far too much with how other people are instructing me to create rather than creating.
I'm the armchair football fan who wishes he was a player.
How can I resolve this? Simply by writing, I guess this hub is the first step to my new found productivity.
Managing My Time
What is the first thing you do when you turn on your computer?
- Check your Emails?
- Look for blog updates?
- Jump into your social networking profiles?
- Head over to the forums?
I've found these activities, while a whole lot of addictive fun, offer relatively little in the way of progress with you building your online presence. Once logged into feed readers or social networking sites you may find yourself, as I have, moving from link to link, browsing the information others have produced.
This does get me any closer to publishing new content!
If you only had 2 hours available to work, what would you do? Hopefully the answer is the most important tasks.
Doing the important stuff first will always yield the greatest benefits. If you start out the day looking to publish a hub for instance, you would be best served to complete the hub first before looking at Facebook, Twitter et al.
This is the exact opposite of what I have been doing lately. I have almost become obsessed with keeping track of what others have accomplished and as a result, I have not been achieving my goals.
Make Social Networking A Reward Not A Necessity!
I will not be doing any of the productivity destroying activities, such as checking emails, reading blogs etc. until I have completed my high priority tasks each day. This will ensure I maximise the amount of time I spend producing my articles and reduce the amount of time I spend socialising online.
Essentially I will set a finite time limit on my personal internet time.
What if you only had 30 minutes to process your emails and update your social networking profiles? What would you do?
This is a "no desert until you've eaten all your dinner approach".
You Can’t Hit A Home Run Each Time.
Another of my issues is my constant struggle for perfection. I feel I have to write the perfect article first time with no need for editing.
This in a way has contributed to my lack of productivity, because the perfect essay does not go onto the page (or screen) first time, I get myself into a funk and stop writing.
To counteract this I am trying to adopt a different approach, writing what comes to me, leaving it for a period then reviewing and editing the piece.
Glad to get that off my chest
This hub was really a way for me to list my productivity issues and determine how I was going to resolve them.
If you have been in a similar position or are worried about falling into the same trap, I hope my venting off of my issues has been of help to.

Thank you for taking your time to write this hub. It is not easy to write for the Internet and probably even more difficult to have some kind of presence outside of the conventional social networks. When I first started writing for Hubpages I used a pen name. I had traffic to my articles and realized that people were searching for the stuff I wrote about. I want to publish a book sometimes in the future and will probably launch some kind of e-product as well. For this very reason I decided to write under my own name. This is how people will find me in the future. I do not really look at the keywords anymore. I write what I want and research the subjects that interest me. Like this I enjoy writing even more. And the traffic flows. Not that much from Hubpages, but from search engines. This is important if you want to make it as a writer in the Internet.
I am glad that there are people who feel that they are perfectionists. A wonderfully written text is a real joy to read. Keep on with your good writing routine. Networking is important, but not always very productive. I am a bit egoistic and prefer to do some research instead.
I found a bit of myself in this hub! Still, you wouldn´t know all of this if you didn´t do all the reading. I have phases when I write and phases when I read. Of course, writing is No.1 priority and drawing traffic No.2! :-) I´m rating this one up! Good luck! And a pearl of wisdom: trust yourself and be persistent - don´t forget to have fun in the way!!!
I find myself writing either very early in the morning like around 5 or very late in the evening around 10 or 11. I don't sleep very long as you can see but it works for me. I grab a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, get my trusty pen out and just start putting down thoughts. After 3 or 4 hours of writing, I take a break and check email and all that other stuff. Great hub. I tend to have the opposite approach - just start writing something and get it "out there". There is a fine balance though and I've recently been reading a lot of hubs about writing, such as this one. Keep up the great work!

This is like looking into a mirror. I have so much other stuff going on everywhere, that I spend too much time on that, and not enough actually churning out articles. Finding a focus seems to help sometimes. This is really a great article, btw. :)

I think it was Ernest Hemingway or some other famous writer who said (and I'm paraphrasing here), "The first draft is always sh&^t." So don't be too hard on yourself if your first draft isn't perfect; it isn't supposed to be. That's why they invented editing :-).
Also, I am one of those people who always has to check her email first thing. I am still trying to do that after I've done some writing, but haven't made it a habit yet. Thank goodness I'm not into social networking that much, or I wouldn't get anything done. Great hub!
Just like you, I spent months simply reading without writing, now I wish I had started earlier, its not as difficult as it seems. Useful hub!
